Lee’s Association Dragon and Lion Dance Team at Lan Su Chinese Garden, 2/3, 2/5 and 2/6

January 24, 2011

Traci and I will be hanging out and performing with the Lee’s Association Dragon and Lion Dance Team at the Lan Su Chinese Garden. As you can imagine, it’s the busiest time of the year for the group, so we’ll be lending our meager abilities at two performances: Thursday 2/3 from 3-5pm, Saturday 2/5 at 12, 1, 2, and 3pm, and Sunday 2/6 at 12, 1, 2, and 3pm. Come celebrate the Year of the Rabbit!

Lan Su Chinese Garden
NW 3rd and Everett

$8.50 adults, $6.50 students

Update: We made it through all 10 performances! It was a busy week but we had a great time playing the cymbals and gong. Traci was even recruited to introduce the group for one afternoon. Here’s a video of the first or second performance on Sunday.

Dancing and Drumming with the Tachibana Dance Group and Utsuki-kai, 1/29, 2-5pm

January 24, 2011

Since moving to Portland, I’ve been taking Japanese dance lessons with the teacher of my NYC teachers. Sahomi Tachibana studied under Saho Tachibana in Tokyo and Fukushima, spent many years in NYC, and then moved to Portland, Oregon. For the past several months I’ve been working on Shoki, a duet version of Byakkotai, and Tsurukame. I’ll be dancing Byakkotai with another Tachibana dancer during the 2pm show at the Mochitsuki Portland event on Saturday, 1/29.

Scottish Rite Center
1512 SW Morrison Street
11-5pm
Tickets: $7 advance, $9 day of event

In addition, Traci and I will be performing with Utsuki-kai, a local mochi-pounding, drumming, and singing group. We’ve had a great time rehearsing with them and we’ll be swinging the kine during the 2pm and 4pm shows at Mochitsuki Portland. Prior to the event, you might catch us on Tuesday 1/25 during the morning news program (KWG with Drew Carney).
