KIOKU at Noguchi Museum, 6/10, 3pm

May 25, 2007

KIOKU will be kicking off the “Music in the Garden” series at the Noguchi Museum in Astoria. We’ll be debuting our new site-specific piece for the museum, along with Pinari, Yatai Bayashi, Miyake, and others.

The sculptures, of course, are amazing and the museum itself has a stunning mix of indoor and outdoor spaces. It’s a bit challenging to get there, but directions are here and remember the shuttle bus from Asia Society to the Noguchi Museum that runs on Sundays.

9-01 33rd Road, at Vernon Boulevard
Long Island City, NY 11106
Admission: Free with Museum Admission ($10, $5 students with ID, free for children under 12 and NYC high school students)

Update: Thanks to David Divincenzo and everyone at the Noguchi Museum for a really fun afternoon! The weather was perfect and we had a great audience, with people from the New York Buddhist Church and a bunch of friends. Here are some photos by Linda:

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing some of the HAPPYFUNSMILE members in their *real* jobs—as actors, composers, and performers. A couple of weeks ago, I went to the Look and Listen festival to hear Ryan’s new piece for video and drumkit. Then it was Michael’s performance of Afro-Colombian drumming, singing, and dancing at New York University. Tonight I checked out Brian as the male lead (William Ratkin) in an amazing new noh play called AOI. Ardith, his fiancee and the designer of our HAPPYFUNSMILE t-shirts, was the costume designer for the production as well!

Ali you know about it, as he continues to perform with my other group, KIOKU. Kaori is an active dancer in the Fujima School of Nihon Buyo and performed at the White Plains Sakura Matsuri and will be dancing again soon! And finally, Akiko will be performing in the Pan-Asian Repertory production of TEA, late May through June. It’s amazing to be surrounded by such talented and busy people…and now you know why we can never schedule a full band rehearsal!

HAPPYFUNSMILE at the NYBC, 5/20, 1:30pm

May 11, 2007

We’ll be doing an unplugged performance for the New York Buddhist Church, Sangha Day, with Brian, Rodrigo, Kaori, Ali, Bill, and Wynn on piano. Full set with a special emphasis on enka, bon-odori tunes, sing-alongs and dance-alongs. All are welcome, but if you are not a member of the NYBC, please bring a donation or food. It’s a potluck lunch too!

Tachibana Dance, White Plains Sakura Matsuri

May 10, 2007

The Tachibana Dance Group had a short performance at the White Plains Sakura Matsuri on Sunday 5/6. My friend Kaori, who dances with the Fujima Group, took these pictures. The dance, Mugiya Bushi, depicts unemployed samurai who take to farming.
